Turning Stress into Success: A Student’s Guide to Thriving Under Pressure.

As a new semester begins, many students find themselves feeling stressed. This can be due to several reasons. Some might feel overwhelmed by the workload in this final semester, while others might have to resit exams they did not pass previously. Additionally, balancing other responsibilities with studies can increase stress levels.

Another stress factor is what’s known as second-hand stress: we naturally pick up on others’ emotions, which can make us anxious. This is particularly true in environments like classrooms where many non-verbal cues and conversations are visible and audible. The symptoms of stress are universal, you might recognise the signs: a racing heart, short breaths, perhaps a red face or tense shoulders. You feel ready for action but not for calm, thoughtful work.

If you are experiencing this, remember, you are not alone. Everyone faces stress, whether from studying, working or other life situations. However, every day, we can choose how to view our stress. Research has shown that our attitude towards stress greatly influences its impact on us. Instead of seeing ourselves as victims of stress, viewing it as a negative force, we can recognise that such an attitude can harm our physical and mental health in the long run.

Consider reframing stress, instead viewing it as a boost to your performance, preparing you to meet challenges head-on. A study suggests that when we view the physical signs of stress—like a fast heartbeat and quick breathing—as our body gearing up for better performance, we can feel more confident and less anxious. This perspective can change our physical response to stress, making us feel more joyous and courageous rather than overwhelmed.

See stress as a motivator: a tight deadline, an exam or a challenging project can push us towards excellence—see Exhibit 1. As you progress, be conscious of how you perceive stress. Trust in your ability to manage it and see it as an opportunity for growth. How we respond to stress is a critical choice we make.

Daniel Goleman, a psychologist and leadership expert, talks about “amygdala hijacks,” where intense emotions lead us to act impulsively, often with regret later. The amygdala, a small part of the brain, triggers a flood of stress hormones when it senses danger, leading to these hijacks. In today’s world, this reaction is rarely helpful. When hijacked, we might focus solely on the perceived threat and miss other solutions. However, by engaging our rational brain, we can regain control and see things more clearly.

  1. Change your perspective. Instead of getting upset with negativity, try to understand and label your emotions and view them positively.
  2. Build positivity. Counteract negativity with positive actions. Smile and always start conversations on a positive note.
  3. Prepare mentally. Before entering stressful situations, remind yourself of two or three things you are grateful for to create a shield against stress.

By adopting these strategies, you can manage and even utilise stress to your advantage.

In the academic world, research challenges are a constant. You need to come up with new ideas, look at lots of information and then write about it clearly. Generative AI, like the tools made by OpenAI, is changing how students do research, it is playing a pivotal role in simplifying and enhancing research activities. It is a big help, but it also introduces critical questions about originality and honesty in academic work.

Here’s how AI can help you with your studies, from coming up with ideas to checking your work.

1. Brainstorming with AI: Unleashing Creativity

ChatGPT-4 from OpenAI is a smart tool that can write, make pictures, understand data and even search the web. It is like having a conversation – you ask it something, and it gives you ideas. You might ask it:

  • I need a new way to think about [your topic]. What’s been said about it recently?
  • What are people in [your field] talking about these days?
  • Can you show me what methods haven’t been used much in [your topic]?

The idea is to use AI to get new ideas and then explore them yourself.

In the digital age, AI is not just a tool; it’s a catalyst for knowledge, transforming the traditional pathways of academic research into avenues of innovative discovery.

2. Collecting and Understanding Data with AI

ChatGPT-4 can also be instrumental in coding tasks, offering assistance with writing, debugging and optimising code across various programming languages. It can generate code for web scraping and data extraction, simplifying these processes significantly. You can ask things like,

  • How do I gather data about [your topic]?
  • What’s the best way to look at this data?”

Even if the first answer is not perfect, it is still a good starting point. It can lead to more effective research methodologies.

Utilising AI in research is not about replacing the researcher’s intellect; it’s about augmenting it, opening doors to new perspectives and possibilities.

3. Checking Your Work with AI

AI can keep track of how your research ideas change and grow. This makes it easier to show others how you did your work, which is important for making your research strong and believable. If you’re working on a computer program, you might ask,

  • Can you find any problems in this code?
  • Can you make this code run faster?
  • How can I document my research process more effectively?

This helps you make your work better and more trustworthy.

4. Getting Ready for Feedback with AI

Before you turn in your work, you can use AI to guess what feedback you might get. Ask it, “What parts of my paper/assignment might someone not like?” This way, you can fix problems before anyone even sees them. After you get feedback, AI can also help you understand and organise it.

While AI significantly enhances the research process, it’s the combination of technological assistance and our own critical thinking that leads to truly deepened understanding and learning.

It is important to remember that AI is a great tool that can significantly enhance the research process, but you should still think for yourself. It should enhance, not replace, your critical thinking and learning. The aim is to deepen understanding, not just speed up tasks.
